There’s a movie with this title and it’s all about a married couple who is unhappy and the wife/mom is freaking out about turning 40. It has a happy ending with the couple rediscovering how much they love each other and figure out how to live life in a new way. But those people in that movie are much older than me; 2-3 years to be exact. So I can’t relate.

The truth is, I remember when my parents turned 40 and I thought they were old. Not old like time to wear elastic band polyester pants (they were always fashionable), but just old enough where I could never imagine what my life would be like at their age or what I might be doing. Keep in mind I was only 20 back then and having a difficult time figuring out what I wanted to do for the next year. 40 was an eternity away.

But then life just happened. I went to school, got a job, got married, bought a house, had some kids, and BAM. I was 40. My dad used to say he didn’t feel 40 and I thought that was weird. Now I know. You watch people around you get older, you see things change in the world, and you see your own babies grow up to be not babies anymore. You hope you’ve learned a little bit about life and to appreciate how precious it is.

I’ve never wanted to be the person who is fighting age every step of the way. I am learning to appreciate each day and all that God has given me. And I’m trying not to care as much about the marks on my body that childbirth has left behind. I have an amazing family, dear friends, a home that I love, a church that I love, and so much more. 40 feels just fine.

Jen Hirschman starting writing on this blog that her husband, Andy, started to post pictures of their remodel on their house. That turned into Jen taking the blog over, only to post silly family stories and photos, update family and friends on some happenings, and then abandon it from time to time. Enjoy!
